Introduction to sports nutrition in strenght endurance sport
Specific nutritional concepts and related articles can be found at the bottom of this page.
Strength-endurance is the main factor limiting performance in sports such as swimming, speed skating and rowing. It is also important for repetitive movements (e.g., figure-skating, wrestling) and is required for steady shooting (static strength-endurance). Furthermore, certain sports have to increase their lactic acid tolerance in order to cope with exercise well above the anaerobic threshold.
Strength-endurance training improves the ability to sustain forces over a longer period of time.
Such exercise burns a lot of fat and neither muscle mass nor strength is increased significantly. Typical training sessions include highly repetitive or slow movements with moderate loads to improve metabolic processes in muscle fibres, in particular, the ones involved in energy supply.
Diet and sports nutrition play a key role in recovery and depending on the sport, performance is limited if energy isn’t replenished during the activity. The stronger a sport depends on anaerobic metabolism, the more significant specific supplements become which may increase lactic acid tolerance.
